Sarah Swanson-Hysell talks about PBL in the third grade at Berkwood Hedge School.

Hi, I'm Sarah and I teach third grade here at Berkwood Hedge, and in third grade we're known as the AIR class. We start the year learning about our Community Values through a reflection on our individual values, our family values, as well as our Berkwood Hedge Community Values-- that is a theme that travels throughout the year. And then we launch into a unit on maps, learning about our Bay Area region, learning our geography skills, and how where we live affects how we live including weather and climate. From there we learn about farming-- specifically we learn about the farm labor movement, going into a dive on the history of Labor and labor movements, and the farm labor movement in California. We also learn about our food choices and we are excited to explore food waste this year. The second half of the year we launch our Birds unit, and during our bird unit we have several components of that unit where we explore deeply why we value birds in our ecosystems and really what makes a bird a bird so students learn to be bird watchers and ornithologists, they dissect owl pellets, and by the end of the unit they are able to go and do their own citizen science data project, recording birds and contributing to the Cornell lab's eBird database to contribute to science about birds. So, I look forward to meeting you on a tour and look forward to talking with you more about all the things we do in third grade. Take care.
