ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE

A special component of the Berkwood Hedge curriculum is weekly environmental science classes that provide students with hands-on experiences and opportunities to learn about the interrelationships of the natural world. Topics include plant and animal life cycles, food webs, and composting waste.

In grades K-2, children represent their observations with words and pictures, make predictions, ask questions and make connections.

In grades 3-5, students begin to think more deeply about topics of study and how these topics interrelate with the environment.

Students develop the background knowledge needed to analyze environmental problems, (e.g. resource consumption and pollution), and consider solutions for preventing and resolving them (e.g. harnessing and storing energy from renewable energy sources such as the sun).

Throughout the grades, the curriculum encourages students to think ecologically and to make choices that sustain the health of the environment.
