School Library
We are a community of readers. The library provides a much-loved place to listen to a story read aloud, cozy up with friends to read, research a topic, enjoy a picture book, or check out books for at-home reading.
The Berkwood Hedge School Library collection contains roughly 5,000 books electronically catalogued for easy access. Staffed by parent volunteers, the library is open every day at snack and lunch recesses.
Our rich library program extends into the classroom, where each of our teachers maintains an extensive book collection specific to grade level curriculum and children's interests. Students develop strong research skills from the beginning. Kindergarteners know the difference between fiction and non-fiction. Older students can identify primary and secondary sources and retrieve reliable information from books, journals, and on-line sources.
Author Visits
Throughout the year, the Library Committee organizes special Author Visits, where students have the opportunity to hear directly from the authors of some of their favorite books, enjoy a reading, get their copies of books signed, and of course, ask lots and lots of questions.
Library Committee Volunteers
A favorite committee among parents, members of the Library Committee staff the school library at lunchtime. These parent volunteers read to students and help them find and check out books. Library Committee members also partner with the school librarian to plan Author Visits, assist with cataloging, and ensure the library maintains and circulates a collection of books on curricular topics that recognize and celebrate diversity and multiculturalism, as well as books that excite, inspire, and delight students.
Junior Librarians
For those students with a passion for books and an interest in library science, we offer Junior Librarian positions that come with specific responsibilities that support the functioning of our school libraries. These leadership opportunities allow students to assist both their peers and younger students, as well as assist with things like the cataloging and care of the school's collection.
