Kalen Meyer, Lower School K-4 Art Teacher

An artist born and raised in Berkeley, California, the daughter of two artists--one painter, one woodworker--Kalen has been creating art for as long as she can remember. After high school, she became interested in Calligraphy and Book Arts thanks to one of her rock climbing partners and reveled in the rich Book Arts community in the Bay Area. She returned to school at San Francisco State to strengthen her design and calligraphic eye, but once there fell in love with painting and printmaking, and graduated with a degree in both in 1990.

Teaching evolved out of volunteering in her children’s classes and discovering that she thoroughly enjoyed sharing art with children. Kalen now teaches in two schools in Berkeley and during summer runs a children’s art camp.
