Our History
A distinctive educational philosophy and bold, innovative streak have set Berkwood Hedge School apart since its earliest days. Our tradition of preparing students for life as both learners and citizens dates back almost 80 years, making it the oldest progressive elementary school in the East Bay.
1940s
Berkwood School was founded 1946 and emphasized small classes, academic proficiency, and the development of each student's full potential. Berkwood School led the way by being the first racially integrated school in Berkeley, utilizing open classrooms, and developing pilot programs, including a national demonstration project for primary school science education. Its reputation as an avant-garde school was enhanced when it became the first school in California to train Head Start teachers.
1960s
The Hedge School was established in the late 1960s by a small group of teachers and parents, and organized as a teacher collective. It brought art, music, drama, and dance to the forefront and reconceptualized the school as a community of students, teachers, and families.
1970s
Berkwood and Hedge merged and reopened on the current campus in 1975 as Berkwood Hedge School, serving students from Kindergarten to fifth grade. In 2005, the school continued to be a vanguard of innovation when it became the first certified Green school in the East Bay.
2000s
In 2001, as part of a strategic planning process to chart the long-term direction of the school, the school transitioned from a collective structure to one administered by a Head of School and a Board of Directors. Despite this major shift, the core philosophy—a rich academic and arts program, close ties between families and the school, a strong sense of community—remains the hallmark of Berkwood Hedge School.
2020s
In 2020, a new chapter in the story began with the opening of Berkwood Hedge Middle School, serving students from fifth through eighth grade. Our student-centered, hands-on program was designed to meet this moment and the unique needs of early adolescents. The carefully crafted curriculum sparks student's interest and enthusiastic engagement, while preparing them to succeed in high school and in life.
Today, Berkwood Hedge School is proud to offer students in kindergarten through eighth grade a dynamic and engaging learning environment that cultivates courage, creativity, curiosity, and connection.
