Spanish
Beginning in kindergarten, children are exposed to the cadence of the Spanish language through songs and games. Simple vocabulary (including greetings, colors, numbers, items in the classroom, the human body, clothing, friends, animals, and verbs) is introduced gradually in the lower grades, using the Total Physical Response (TPR) approach. TPR is a method of teaching that engages multiple intelligences, thus enhancing language acquisition and retention.
Language study becomes more formal in the upper grades as students engage in simple and more complex dialogues, study grammar, and begin to read and write in Spanish.
In our afterschool care program, our bilingual staff engages children in an immersion approach to learning Spanish.
