Letters from the Director
September, 2008
Dear Berkwood Hedge Families and Community,
As we unveil our new website, I appreciate the opportunity to share some important things that are happening at school. We joined with a number of other independent schools in sponsoring a recent presentation by Tim Wise, an activist and educator who writes and speaks widely on issues of race, equity, and white privilege. Berkwood Hedge teachers and staff, board members, and parents were inspired by a presentation that challenged us to look critically at the role of diversity within our school and to strengthen our work as anti-racism activists.
As a progressive school, it is our mission to promote social justice and strengthen diversity within both the school culture and the larger community. I believe this important effort begins with shared conversations that help us deepen our understanding of the effects of living in a culture in which institutionalized racism damages people of all colors. This month our teachers began this conversation at our weekly staff meeting, sharing personal reflections on race and privilege. The Berkwood Hedge Diversity Committee members read and discussed White Like Me: Reflections on Race from a Privileged Son by Tim Wise.
On Monday, November 17, 2008 at 6:30 pm, the Committee will sponsor a book discussion for members of the wider school community.
This year our Board of Directors is continuing its work with diversity consultant Nadiyah Taylor, looking at issues of race and equity at both the personal and institutional levels.
As educators we are continuing the work of shaping a school culture that is welcoming and inclusive of children and families, as well as teachers and staff, from all racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds. Our school wide theme this year is "Connected and Respected." At every grade level, students will participate in developmentally appropriate lessons and activities that teach skills for communicating effectively, resolving conflicts, and promoting mutual understanding.
We believe these efforts will help us make a difference, as individuals and as a school community. In kindergarten the SPIRITS practice "saying something" when they learn that someone is being treated unfairly. We hope all of our students will learn to be allies to their friends and classmates now and in the future.
Knowing that you chose Berkwood Hedge and support our mission, we invite every member of our community to get involved with us as we learn to make our school a more equitable and just place for children to grow and learn.
Sincerely,
Jane Friedman
