Frequently Asked Questions about the Berkwood Hedge Annual Fund

Perhaps you have some questions about the Annual Fund and why it is a yearly tradition in which every member of our community is asked to participate. Thus, the most frequently asked questions and answers to those questions are below. This year our campaign begins in November and will end on January 28, 2011. Our goal is to raise $68,000 with 100% participation from current families and staff.

Why does Berkwood Hedge have an Annual Fund?

Like all independent schools, tuition alone does not cover the cost of educating a child at Berkwood Hedge. Ninety percent (90%) of Berkwood Hedge's income comes from tuition. We need to make up the difference of approximately $1,200 per student through fundraising. The Annual Fund helps to bridge this gap. It is therefore critical that our families and staff support Berkwood Hedge by contributing to the Annual Fund.

At the philosophical level, Berkwood Hedge is more than a school: we are a community. That means we are responsible for one another, that we contribute to the school for the benefit of every community member, and that we give something back to ensure that Berkwood Hedge remains open and available to families that help the school fulfill its mission. The Annual Fund is one of the ways we can all demonstrate our commitment to Berkwood Hedge, to our children, and to one another.

Why doesn't the school just raise tuition to cover the difference?

One of the guiding principles of Berkwood Hedge is diversity, including socio-economic diversity. It is one of the reasons many families choose to send their children to our school. We keep our tuition below the median charged by our Bay Area peers to help ensure that Berkwood Hedge remains accessible to as many families as possible.

How will the money raised through the Annual Fund be put to use?

Funds help to finance our strong programs in the arts and sciences, augment classroom budgets and provide competitive benefits and salaries that allow us to retain our dedicated teaching staff. The Annual Fund also helps us provide tuition assistance for families who need it. Approximately 20% of our tuition income is dedicated to tuition assistance, above the average for other independent schools in the East Bay.

Why is 100% participation so important?

One hundred percent participation in the Annual Fund by everyone at Berkwood Hedge is a way we express our commitment to our community and its teachers and staff. One hundred percent participation is also a benchmark that many foundations use when deciding whether or not to award grants.

Are donations tax-deductible?

Berkwood Hedge School is a non-profit organization FEIN #94-1408159. Every donation to the Berkwood Hedge Annual Fund is 100% tax-deductible.

Can I donate appreciated assets to the Annual Fund?

Yes, if you have stocks that have appreciated in value since you originally purchased them, there can be additional tax savings if you donate these directly to the school. Please contact Betsy Willson at 510-883-6990 if you are considering a stock transfer to Berkwood Hedge.

How do I know how much to give?

There is no set rule as to exactly how much to give. We ask only that each family give the best donation they can. If every family gives to the best of their ability, we can meet or exceed our goal for this year. For many families, thinking of the Annual Fund as an additional tuition payment is appropriate. For others, the amount will be less. Some families have the financial ability to give well beyond a monthly tuition payment. Contributions are kept confidential so that each family can feel comfortable giving to the best of their ability.

I can't give very much. What difference will my donation make?

We know that every family's financial situation is unique. The only gift that is too small is no gift at all. Every dollar counts and 100% participation is critical for a successful Annual Fund.

What is the difference between the Annual Fund and the Spring Celebration & Auction?

The Annual Fund is the major fundraiser for Berkwood Hedge families, accounting for roughly three quarters of our total fundraising budget. The Spring Auction is an adult celebration and party as well a fundraiser. Each event plays an important part in raising funds as well as building community at Berkwood Hedge.

Is it important that I give before February 1, 2011?

It is very important that you give to the Annual Fund before February 1st so we can begin our budgeting process for the coming year knowing how much we will have raised for the Annual Fund. We want to continue to manage our financial resources well. The less we guess, the more appropriately we can budget those resources.
